When to Paint Your House Exterior in Missouri

April 9, 2026 Garcia Pro Services LLC

Exterior paint does not usually fail because of the paint. It fails because of when and how it was applied. In Missouri, the reliable window runs from late April through mid-October, and even inside that window there are days you should not be putting paint on a house.

The number most people miss is dew point, not temperature. If a surface drops below the dew point overnight, moisture condenses on fresh paint and you get a dull, chalky, poorly bonded film. That is why we stop applying in the late afternoon rather than pushing until dark — the coating needs time to set before the temperature falls.

Most quality exterior coatings want a surface temperature above 50°F. Surface temperature is not air temperature: a south-facing wall in direct August sun can be thirty degrees hotter than the air, which makes paint flash off too fast and leaves lap marks. We follow the shade around a house through the day for exactly that reason.

Humidity matters just as much, and Missouri summers have plenty of it. Above roughly 85 percent relative humidity, cure times stretch out badly and the risk of surfactant leaching — those brown streaks that show up on a fresh coat after rain — goes way up. A dry stretch with moderate humidity beats a hot, sticky one every time.

The other half of timing is prep. A house that gets washed, scraped, sanded, caulked, and primed will outlast one that got two coats over chalking siding, no matter what month it happened. Prep is where the years come from.
